Global TV Giants Bet on RGB-Mini LED Technology
In the latest race for technological supremacy in the television industry, major players are increasingly betting on RGB-Mini LED technology. This shift marks a significant step forward in the evolution of display technologies, with brands like Hisense, TCL, Samsung, and Sony leading the charge.
At the beginning of this year, during two major consumer electronics exhibitions top-tier brands showcased their RGB-Mini Led solutions. Hisense, for instance, debuted its 116-inch LED TV at CES, featuring RGB-Mini LED technology. Following this, the company officially displayed its 100UX RGB-Mini LED TV in China in February. By the end of March, Hisense released the world's first RGB-Mini LED TV, with the 116-inch UX model priced at 99,999 yuan ($14,200). The 85-inch and 100-inch versions, priced at 27,999 yuan and 49,999 yuan respectively, are available for pre-order on JD.com but have not yet been listed for sale.
TCL also demonstrated its RGB-Mini LED prototype at CES, showcasing its early research in this area. The company plans to introduce RGB-Mini LED technology in its upcoming flagship X series, which will continue to use its proprietary technology for large-scale zoning.
Samsung, on the other hand, presented its RGB Micro Led TV prototype at CES 2025, adopting a micro-RGB three-color LED backlighting approach. Notably, Samsung has integrated this technology into its 2025 TV product line, with plans to launch 75/85/98-inch (8K) RGB Micro LED TVs this year.
Sony announced its RGB-Mini LED TV technology in mid-March at its Tokyo headquarters, unveiling a 75-inch prototype. The company later showcased the technology at AWE in China. However, Sony did not include this technology in its 2025 product line, instead indicating that the TVs would be launched in the following year.
The adoption of RGB-Mini LED technology signals a clear move towards market competition among the world's top four TV manufacturers. This time, domestic brands are taking the lead. The core advantage of RGB-Mini LED lies in its breakthroughs in color accuracy and color gamut coverage, which significantly enhance image quality. Unlike traditional Mini LED backlights that rely on white LEDs and conversion technologies like KSF phosphors or quantum dots, RGB-Mini LED integrates three-color LED chips within a single diode, generating target colors directly from the mixing of primary colors.
This technology is considered the "ultimate evolution" of LCD displays and even challenges the quality ceiling of QD-OLED. It also addresses the issue of quantum dot light decay by independently driving RGB sources, thereby extending the product's lifespan.
From an industrial perspective, the rapid penetration of Mini LED TVs in 2024, driven by factors such as home appliance subsidies, major sporting events, gaming marketing, and shopping festivals, has accelerated. According to industry research data, the overall shipment volume of Mini LED backlight TVs is expected to reach 8.2 million units in 2024, doubling from 2023. However, the growth rate is expected to slow down as the technology enters a "steady recovery phase" and moves towards becoming standard.
RGB-Mini LED technology is emerging as a new lever for TV brand premiums, offering more potential in brightness, lifespan, and cost compared to OLED. This makes it an effective counterbalance to the competitive pressure from OLED technology.
Industry experts predict that 2025 will mark the beginning of the RGB Mini LED TV application era. While widespread adoption is still some distance away, mainstream brands have already begun to actively deploy this technology. However, achieving large-scale commercialization will require overcoming technical thresholds such as optimizing the "dual-chip" architecture, solving signal crosstalk issues, and improving industry chain synergy efficiency.
As the industry enters a new cycle, RGB-Mini LED represents an innovative direction for LCD technology, providing new ideas and growth points for the development of the industry. With global top-tier brands entering the fray, RGB-Mini LED is poised to become a significant driver of technological innovation in the TV industry.
